How To Replace Your Windscreen Wiper Blades In Just 3 Easy Steps

If you own a vehicle, you’ll know replacing the wiper blades is as fundamental as checking the oil, filling the washer fluid or assessing the tread on your tyres.

Indeed, you may not realise, but windscreen wipers rank among the most important of the many different components that make up your vehicle. Put simply, you’d certainly miss them if they weren’t there!

Keep Your Vehicle Safe, Legal And On The Road

It’s why the law views them in a similar way. In fact, it is illegal to drive a vehicle without windscreen wipers, while worn blades could be the difference between you passing and failing an MOT.

While the consequences of having faulty, worn or broken wiper blades are extreme, fortunately replacing them is both easy and cost-effective.

With Wiperblades.co.uk you can purchase the wiper blades that are guaranteed to fit your vehicle, all at great value prices, even among top name brands like Bosch, Michelin and Valeo, and they can be fixed in just seconds.

So, don’t get caught out – if it is time to change your wiper blades, it will cost you little time, money and effort to keep your windscreen clear and your car on the road

When Is The Right Time To Change My Wiper Blades?

Wiper blades undergo a lot of stress when they are fixed to your car. As well as being a moving component exposed to the elements, the materials will inevitably wear down gradually when in use as they are making constant contact with the windscreen.

Indeed, wiper blades cope with more than simply wiping away water from your windscreen during rainy conditions – UV rays from the sun, deposits of oil from other cars around you, bugs and unforeseen debris all take their toll on them.

Wiper blades are designed to be durable and sturdy to withstand these challenges but they will ultimately wear down over time and if you don’t replace them, they could be classified as dangerous or illegal –your car won’t pass an MOT if this is the case.

So how do you know when to replace them? When driving, you might notice over time that the rubber blades will clear the windscreen less evenly, leaving some streaks of moisture in places. They may also start to squeak as the rubber encounters friction on the windscreen.

If in doubt, you can inspect them close up and assess the blades for any blemishes, such as chips, tears and unevenness. If this occurs, then the time has come to get new wiper blades.

Change Your Windscreen Wipers In 3 Easy Steps

1.    Clean And Protect Your Windscreen

So, your Wiperblades.co.uk box has arrived in the post and it’s time to replace those blades. First thing to do is to prepare and protect your windscreen.

Give the screen a wipe down with a cloth to ensure that when you use your wiper blades for the first time, it’ll give a clean and crisp swipe straight away.

We also recommend placing a soft cloth down on the portion of the windscreen that the blade will wipe. While the arm will lock into position when you lift it to its maximum leverage, they are also spring-loaded at anything less than full mast and could snap back to potentially cause damage to the screen.

If getting the arm into a comfortable position is proving troublesome, refer to the vehicle’s manual for guidance.  You may need to put apply ‘wiper service mode’, which will allow the blade arm to lift.

2.    Removing The Old Wiper Blade

Once you’ve lifted the arm, it is time to remove the old wiper blades. Take a moment to understand the particular mechanism you have on your vehicle and refer to the instructions for guidance.

If it has a slider, then test for an action that allows it to slide. If it is a hook, consider how it might come unhooked. While you shouldn’t force an action that is not coming relatively easily, recognise that some mechanisms might be clogged with debris, so be patient and check the instructions.

Once you have removed the wiper blades, don’t throw them away – they can be recycled as a local waste collection facility.

3.    Clipping The New Wiper Blade

Having removed the wiper blades, you’ll now be familiar with how the mechanism works and can use that to understand how to fix your new blades.

While there are multiple mechanisms used for fixing wiper blades to the arm, the blades you have ordered using your registration plate details will fit. So, proceed with confidence but be gentle all the same.

Please note, that the driver and passenger side have different length blades, so make sure you fix them the correct way around. The driver side wiper blade will be longer than the passenger side.

You may need to use different clips to fix the blades in place, but these will be supplied either in the box or fitted to the wiper blade already.

And that’s it… how simple was that?

What Happens If I Get It Wrong?

When you receive your wiper blades from Wiperblades.co.uk, you’ll also get easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions detailing how to fit them that are specific to that model and written with your vehicle in mind.

Not only that, you can scan a QR code on the box with your phone that will take you to a simple video tutorial showing exactly what you need to do.

In short, don’t be intimidated, we’re here to help every step of the way. We’ve got you!

Is It Better To Get A Mechanic To Fit Them?

It’s a common misconception that it takes an experienced mechanic’s hand to replace wiper blades, a perception consolidated by some stores offering a pricey fee to have someone do it for you.

But we are here to assure you that changing wiper blades is so easy, it can be done in less than a minute even if you have never attempted it before.

So before you spend £8 on the pricey labour of just a minute or so, go ahead and attempt it yourself… and then treat yourself to a couple of sausage rolls or a latte afterwards for a job very well done yourself.
